自然主义是悲观的现实主义。自然主义者将人类置于一个机械化的世界并将其视为这个世界的受害者。在《嘉莉妹妹》中,自然主义被德莱塞的机械决定论诠释得淋漓尽致。他主张人是一种化学机械,其生活被他自身的化学性所决定。作为世界文学宝库中的一部名著,这本书的成功很大程度上得益于自然主义的表现。[著者文摘]

Naturalism is pessimistic realism with a philosophy that sets man in a mechanic world and conceives of him as victimized by that world. In Sister Carrie, this element is best illustrated by Dreiser＇s theory of ＂chemical determinism＂, that is, human being is a chemical mechanism and his life is determined by his chemistry.
