The Meaning of Human Existence : Different Views in Shakespeare' s Dramas and Christianity
Xiao SiXin
Abstract:
Shakespeare's plays and Christianity have something in common: to seek for the meaning of human life. They both reflect something that goes beyond human existence. However, they differ in their understanding of transcendence : Christianity focuses on theology as its ontology in the sense that it presupposes the existence of God and insists that man' s free will be under God's control. Such view restricts human freedom. Shakespeare's plays, on the contrary, focus on universe as its ontology. According to Shakespeare' s plays, transcendence comes from human reasoning, the purification of human sufferings and tragic experience. His plays reflect man' s admiration and mystification of the universe.[著者文摘]
