Structural Identifications of "The Custom-House" with The Scarlet Letter

Abstract:
"The Custom-House", a long introduction to The Scarlet Letter, is identified structurally with the body of the novel in that its narrator "I" has made the same inward journey from Original Sin through complete depravity to Justification or Vivification, just as the heroes have done in the novel. The descriptions of V-frame journeys become the basis of structural identifications of both texts. By composing the novel, Hawthorne intended to repent of his ancestors' cruelties and remove the curses from the persecuted. The heroine Hester continued to fall after adultery until she chose out of her free will to be guided by Christian love during her ascending journey. After a descending journey that turned out even darker along with the steps, Arthur Dimmesdale completed his brief ascendance. The V-structure identifies the preface with the body of the novel since it defines internally how the author conjured up the characters' destinies, and is externally represented as the main frames in both texts.[著者文摘]
