摘 要:
徐桐等清流派，对已经发生巨变的国际局势并不了解，不懂得中西文化可以交流，共同进步，认为学习外国的长处，就是离经叛道，仍然坚持尊王攘夷，洋人侵略中国，该杀，教民已为化外之民，不受保护，铁路破坏人民生计，该拆，与教民为难的就是义民。袁昶等长期办理外交，对外国比较了解，不赞成杀无辜的洋人、教民、攻使馆、与外国宣战，结果被杀，可见斗争之激烈。[著者文摘]

Abstract:
Xu Tong ,as well as others in Qingliu school,didn＇t understand the international situation which had changed greatly. They didn＇t know Chinese and western culture could be exchanged and progressed mutually. They thought learning foreign merits was departing from the classics and rebelling against orthodoxy. They still insisted in the idea of respecting Qing Dynasty and rebelling other nations. They believed that the foreigners who invaded China should be killed; the religious believers who were outside Chinese civilization should not be protected,and the railway that destroyed Chinese life should be taken apart. They thought those who were against religious believers are noble people. However, Yuan Chang had been dealing with diplomatic affairs for a long time, so he knew better foreign countries. He disagreed on killing innocent foreigners, religious believers, attacking embassies and declaring war with foreign countries. Unfortunately he was killed,which reflected the harsh conflicts at that time.[著者文摘]
