摘 要:
近代上海的开放把它变成了有名的“十里洋场”，作为中国近代出现的第一批知识分子中的一员。王韬19世纪40年代末初次来到上海时就被发达的西方物质文明所吸引，并成为他后来进入上海墨海书馆从事翻译工作的重要原因。虽然王韬承认西方文明有其自身的优点，虽然进入上海墨海书馆工作是自己主动的选择，虽然其收入之高令人羡慕，可王韬却把自己在上海和西方人合作的生活描写得苦不堪言。他再三表白他不得已而为之的苦衷，希望能获得朋友们谅解。为西方人工作使得王韬受到传统社会的排斥，置身于中西文化的激烈冲突之中，成为生活在正统社会文化边缘的“边缘人”。在墨海书馆工作的10年中，他一直抱有强烈的“华尊夷卑”的观念，总是为自己不得不为夷人工作感到非常耻辱，一直陷入对自己的“事夷”行为的深深地自责和挣扎之中，表现出对西方文化的强烈抗拒。[著者文摘]

The Intuitional Appreciation and Internal Resistance ——A Study of the Reaction to the Western Culture of the Modern Chinese Intellectuals Through Wang

Abstract:
The opening of modern Shanghai has been made a famous metropolis infested with foreign adventurers before liberation. As one of the first generation of modern Chinese intellectuals, Wang Tao is attracted by the advanced western material civilization when he comes to Shanghai at the end of 1840, which is an important reason attracting him to work in the London Mission Society Press. He admits that the western civilization has its own merits, and it is his willing choice of entering the London Mission Society Press, and his salary is high, but Wang Tao describes his life of cooperating with westerners as suffering. He always explains for his action of ＂ working for the foreigners＂, recounting his worries and difficulties of making such a choice, hoping that his friends can pardon him. Because of working for westerners, Wang Tao is rejected by the traditional society, living in the radical crash between the Chinese and the Western culture, becoming ＂the marginal person＂. In the ten years of his working in the Press, he still has strong conception of ＂honorable China, humble foreign＂, so he is in the deep blaming of himself, shaming of working for foreigners and presenting the strong resistance to the western culture.[著者文摘]
